Women Who Create / Kayti Feather
Women Who Create / Kayti Feather. This week I am mega excited to induct Kayti Feather into our Women Who Create Things Interviews series hall of fame. If you haven’t met Kayti’s colourful styling yet you are in for a treat! She is one half of the creative duo behind the amazing Caboodle Magazine which is the UK’s lovliest fashion, craft, kitsch lifestyle publication. I have been lucky enough to work on several projects for Kayti and an constantly inspired by her brightly tinted visions.
Tell us a little about your background…
I’ve been a fashion photographer for the last 15 or so years and was lucky enough to travel the world doing so. I started Caboodle Magazine last year after a life long obsession with magazines and always dreaming to have my own! I have loved getting more into the design side of things and it’s a great outlet for all my crazy colourful ideas! I still work as a photographer from my home studio in York and love to be crafty in my spare time!
Do you have creative habits or rituals within your work that help you stay focussed and happy?
I do a nice mix of projects and that keeps it diverse, no two days are the same really! One day I might be shooting a campaign for a brand and the next I might be testing recipes for a food shoot or out prop hunting for a set build. So I’m always moving from one thing to another which keeps things fresh and fun. I always play records when I’m working at my desk though, gotta have a good soundtrack going, and I usually have a jar of mints on the go too!
What two things can’t you live without?
My doggies, who are my constant companions. And sugar, I have the worst sweet tooth and can’t function without cake!
What is your biggest source of inspiration?
I love colour, exploring new places, I watch tons of movies, pop culture, nostalgia and hanging with my girlfriends always throws up some good ideas!
What is the meaning of ‘creativity’ to you?
Anything where some love has gone into it, and for me just the pleasure in looking at something and saying “I made that!”.
If you could collaborate on a creative project or idea with anyone… who would it be & why?
To create a set for a fashion shoot with Camille Walala would be incredible!! I love her work, it definitely inspires joy in me!
Do you have a favourite piece of equipment that inspires your day to day process?
I just painted my old wooden desk turquoise and productivity has soared!!
What is the best thing about running your *business/blog/working for yourself?
I love working from home, usually with a dachshund on my knee! And just meeting so many other lovely creatives, especially through Caboodle has been really inspiring, I finally feel like I’ve found my true calling with my work and it makes me really happy.
What is your proudest creative moment in your journey so far?
Holding the first issue of Caboodle in my hands after all the years of dreaming about doing it! Having people tell me they enjoyed reading it or an article had inspired them makes all the hard work worthwhile. Seeing pictures of it on Instagram from readers around the world blows my mind!
