Women Who Create / Karli Dendy
Hey folks! This week I welcome fellow Etsy Captain and creative genius Karli, one half of Brighton based design dream team designosaur. Continue reading to get the scoop!
Tell us a little about your background...
Hey! I'm Karli, one half of jewellery and accessories brand designosaur (the other half is my boyfriend Jacques). We started making dinosaur inspired jewellery back in 2012, and that has evolved to the bright, bold and fun products we still make now. I'm also captain of the Brighton Etsy Team, and have been since the end of 2013, which means I run a team of over 1000 members with 10 leaders to create events in and around Brighton from markets, to talks a pop up shop and everything inbetween. I became self employed in 2014 and it's been nonstop ever since!
Do you have creative habits or rituals within your work that help you stay focussed and happy?
I'm not very habit driven as I find that I always try to rebel against myself. I do express a lot of my creativity through my appearance. I currently have blue hair (a childhood dream) I always paint on loads of bright eyeshadow and I love wearing colourful clothing. You'll also never find me without jewellery especially a necklace, but normally 10 fingers of rings too!
What two things can't you live without?
A none smudge-y pen (I'm left handed) and my camera!
What is your biggest source of inspiration?
Travel! I love to travel and a chance to see something new everyday really inspires me to come up with fresh new ideas.
What is the meaning of 'craft' to you
I really struggle with the word "craft" as I feel it can create such negative connotations for many people, but I think to craft is to design and make something with skill.
If you could collaborate on a creative project or idea with anyone... who would it be & why?
Andy Warhol! I'm in love with all things pop up, the concept of turning the commercial into art and visa versa.
Do you have a favourite piece of equipment that inspires your day to day process?
Acrylic swatches! oooo the colours!
What is the best thing about running your business?
Working when you want, how you want, doing what you want! I can start work at 4pm or in the summer I can go to the beach on a Tuesday, I can lay on the floor, sit on the sofa, tip everything out on my desk, blare out drum and bass and do it all whilst wearing my pajamas if I want to!
What is your proudest creative moment in your journey so far?
Creating products that are sold in real-life shops(!) from the Natural History Museum Shop to boutique stores in Japan.
